Desperados Wild Megaways Slots Review - Cascading Reels, Pick Your Free Spins & Bonus Buy

Desperados Wild Megaways Slot - Editor’s Comment

Desperados Wild Megaways is not the first western slot on the market, but it brings a few ideas that make it worth a closer look. The Megaways engine provides up to 117,649 ways to win, and the cascading reels keep the base game moving. The real hook is the choice between two free spins modes: Sunset Free Spins, which uses an unlimited multiplier, and Jail House Free Spins, which locks wilds in place. That decision adds a layer of strategy that many slots lack.

According to the official rules published by Loto-Québec, the base game has an expected return of 96.49% when using the best selection strategy, and the Bonus Buy mode has a slightly higher 96.51% RTP. The game also includes a Bonus Top Up feature and a Spin Chance mechanic, as described in the official rules.

One thing to note: the maximum win is capped at $250,000, and the rules state it may not be possible to reach that limit from every stake configuration. That is a meaningful limitation for high rollers. Also, the game is not available in every jurisdiction; the Tropicana Casino page specifies that players must be located in New Jersey to wager for real money. Irish players should check local availability with licensed operators.

What is the Desperados Wild Megaways Slot?

Desperados Wild Megaways is a six-reel online slot developed by Inspired Gaming. It uses the Megaways licence from Big Time Gaming, which means each reel can display between two and seven symbols, and an extra reel above reels two to five adds further symbols. This creates a variable number of ways to win, up to a maximum of 117,649. The game is set in a western town, with symbols including card ranks, whiskey bottles, pistols, dynamite, and a sheriff's badge.

The game was released in 2019, according to Fluffy Spins.

Desperados Wild Megaways Slot Machine At A Glance

The table below summarises the key specifications of Desperados Wild Megaways, based on the official game rules and operator information. Where a detail is not confirmed by these sources, it is omitted rather than guessed.

The RTP figures are theoretical long-term averages, not predictions for any individual session. The bet limits shown are in GBP from a UK-facing operator; Irish players should check the currency and limits at their chosen licensed operator.

Desperados Wild Megaways Slot RTP, Payout and Volatility

Return to Player (RTP) is a theoretical percentage of all wagered money that a slot is designed to pay back over a very large number of spins. It is not a guarantee of individual results. For Desperados Wild Megaways, the official rules from Loto-Québec state that the expected payback for an individual game cycle in the base game is a maximum of 96.49%, depending on selection strategy. The best strategy is described as collecting Sunset Free Spins with 4 scatters and Jail House Free Spins with 5 or more. The Bonus Buy mode has an expected payback of 96.51%, and Bonus Top Up ranges between 96.41% and 96.58%.

Fluffy Spins lists the volatility as high. Volatility refers to the risk profile of a slot: high volatility typically means less frequent but potentially larger payouts. The game's hit frequency is listed by Fluffy Spins as 10%-20%, meaning a winning combination occurs on roughly 10% to 20% of spins. However, hit rate does not indicate the size of those wins.

The maximum win in a single game is capped at $250,000 according to the Loto-Québec rules. The rules also note that it may not be possible to reach this limit from every stake configuration. Payouts are multiplied by the base stake, and all wins pay left to right across adjacent reels. The highest award is paid per winning combination, and wins on different combinations are added together.

How to Play Desperados Wild Megaways

Playing Desperados Wild Megaways follows the standard pattern for a Megaways slot. The official rules outline the following steps:

1. Set your stake using the 'CHANGE STAKE' button. The minimum and maximum bets will depend on the operator; Fluffy Spins lists £0.20 to £5.
2. Press the 'SPIN' button to spin the reels. You can also use the 'AUTOPLAY' button to set a number of automatic spins and a loss limit.
3. Wins are awarded for matching symbols on adjacent reels from left to right. The award is multiplied by the number of symbols that occur per reel in the winning combination.
4. Winning symbols in the base game and Sunset Free Spins become part of a cascade: they are removed and replaced by new symbols from above, and from the right on the extra reel.
5. Land four or more scatter symbols anywhere in view to trigger the free spins bonus. You then choose between Sunset Free Spins and Jail House Free Spins.
6. If your credit falls below the current bet but is still greater than zero, the Spin Chance feature may trigger automatically, offering a chance to win an extra spin at the current bet.

Autoplay requires you to set a loss limit before starting. The rules explain that a custom loss limit stops autoplay when your balance falls below a chosen threshold. There is no strategy that can guarantee wins; the game uses a random number generator, and each spin is independent.

Desperados Wild Megaways Gameplay, Graphics & Sound

The visual style of Desperados Wild Megaways is classic western. The reels are set against a desert backdrop that changes to a western town during the free spins bonus. The symbols include low-value card ranks (9 to Ace) styled with western fonts, and higher-value items like whiskey bottles, pistols, dynamite, and a sheriff's badge. The sheriff's badge is a high-paying symbol.

The game uses HTML5, so it runs in a browser on desktop, laptop, smartphone, and tablet devices without needing a separate app. The cascading reels add a sense of momentum, as winning symbols disappear and new ones drop in.

Desperados Wild Megaways Slot Features

Desperados Wild Megaways includes several features that are active during the base game and bonus rounds. The official rules from Loto-Québec describe the following:

• Cascades: During the base game and Sunset Free Spins, every winning symbol is part of a cascade. Winning symbols are replaced by new symbols coming from above on the reels and from the right on the extra reel.
• Wild Symbols: Wilds substitute for all symbols except the Bonus scatter.
• Extra Reel: An additional reel above reels 2, 3, 4, and 5 adds an extra symbol to each of those reels, increasing the number of ways to win.
• Spin Chance: If your credit is reduced below the current price of play but is still greater than zero, Spin Chance may trigger automatically. It offers a chance to wager your remaining credit for an additional spin at the current bet. The chance of winning is proportional to the ratio of your remaining credit to the current bet.

These features are part of the core game mechanics and are documented in the official rules. They do not guarantee wins; they simply define how the game operates.

Bonus Features: Wilds, Multipliers, and Free Spins

The main bonus feature in Desperados Wild Megaways is the free spins round, which is triggered by landing four or more scatter symbols anywhere in view during the base game. When triggered, you choose between two modes: Sunset Free Spins and Jail House Free Spins. The official rules provide the following details:

Sunset Free Spins

• Four bonus symbols award 8 free spins.
• Each additional bonus symbol adds 2 free spins, up to a maximum of 76.
• Each winning cascade increases an unlimited multiplier by +1.
• Winning symbol combination pays are multiplied by the current multiplier at the start of the cascade.
• During Sunset Free Spins, scatter symbols only appear on the extra reel.
• Landing 3 scatters in view awards 5 additional free spins; 4 scatters awards 10 additional free spins.

Jail House Free Spins

• Four bonus symbols award 12 free spins.
• Each additional bonus symbol adds 2 free spins, up to a maximum of 80.
• All wilds that land in view drop to the bottom of the reel and lock in for the remainder of the feature. When a wild locks in, it also locks the Megaways on that reel.
• When multiple wilds lock in, they merge, and the multiplier on the symbol indicates how many wilds have been locked in.
• If you fill a reel with locked wilds, you are awarded an additional 5 free spins.

In addition to the free spins, the game offers a Bonus Buy option. According to the official rules, Bonus Buy allows you to purchase direct entry to the bonus feature for 100x the current stake. Purchasing the feature immediately starts a game that guarantees at least 3 scatter symbols to land in view. Note that the Tropicana Casino page states that purchasing the game guarantees at least 4 scatter symbols, which conflicts with the official rules; the official rules specify at least 3. The Bonus Buy RTP is 96.51%.

There is also a Bonus Top Up feature. This allows you to enhance the bonus feature by risking the current bonus entry for a chance to win an upgraded bonus or a mystery cash prize. Purchasing an upgrade guarantees that the bonus will be upgraded. Bonus Top Up is purchased for a multiple of the current stake, and its RTP ranges from 96.41% to 96.58%.

Other Desperados Wild Megaways Features

Beyond the main bonus features, Desperados Wild Megaways includes a few additional mechanics worth noting. The Autoplay function allows you to set a number of automatic spins and a loss limit, as described in the official rules. You can also set a win limit to stop autoplay if you win over a certain amount. The Spin Chance feature, mentioned earlier, is a second-chance mechanic that can trigger when your balance is low. It is not a bonus in the traditional sense but a way to potentially extend play with your remaining credit.

The game also has a game recovery system: if a real play game is interrupted, it will recover to the last known state. Any game in progress for more than 35 days will be cancelled, and the corresponding bet will be refunded. This is a standard player protection feature.

Where to Play Desperados Wild Megaways

Desperados Wild Megaways is available at licensed online casinos that carry Inspired Gaming titles. The game is not tied to a single operator. However, availability varies by jurisdiction. The Tropicana Casino page states that players must be located within the State of New Jersey to wager for real money, and BetVictor's page shows a geoblock for prohibited locations. Irish players should look for operators licensed by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) or another recognised regulator. You can browse our Irish casino reviews to find licensed options, and check our GRAI licensing guide for more on the regulatory framework.

Before playing, always check the operator's terms for the exact RTP version of the game, as RTP can vary between jurisdictions and operators. The official rules from Loto-Québec provide the most detailed technical information, and Lottomart's page offers a UK-facing overview.
