Responsible Gambling — Stay in Control
Online gambling should stay fun. This page covers warning signs, account-level limit tools, self-exclusion options and the free helplines available to players in Ireland.
18+ Only. If gambling is causing harm, help is available — see the resources below.
Most people who play slots do so for entertainment, with budgets they can afford to lose. For a minority, gambling can become a problem. The earlier you notice it, the easier it is to act. Slots Irish is an editorial guide — we are not a treatment service — but every casino we cover should provide responsible-gambling tools and signpost help. This page collects the warning signs, the practical controls and the support contacts in one place.
For background on Irish licensing and consumer protections, see our Irish gambling laws guide.
Warning signs of problem gambling
If several of the following statements feel familiar, it may be time to take a break or seek help:
- You spend more time or money on gambling than you intended.
- You chase losses with bigger or more frequent bets.
- You hide your gambling activity from family or friends.
- You borrow money, sell items or use bills money to gamble.
- Gambling affects your sleep, mood, work or relationships.
- You feel restless or irritable when you try to cut back.
A short, anonymous self-test is available on the GamCare self-assessment tool.
Tools to stay in control
Every UKGC-, MGA- and (once live) GRAI-licensed casino is required to offer the following account-level controls. They are the most effective first step before considering self-exclusion.
Deposit limits
Cap the amount you can deposit per day, week or month. Increases must be confirmed after a cooling-off period.
Loss and wager limits
Cap how much you can lose or stake over a chosen period — independent of how much you deposit.
Time limits and reality checks
Set a maximum session length or receive a pop-up reminder of how long you have been playing.
Cool-off periods
Pause your account for 24 hours, a week or longer. You will not receive marketing during the pause.
These controls are usually located under Account → Responsible Gambling or My Limits. If a casino does not offer them, that is a red flag — see our vetted Irish casinos.
Self-exclusion
If limit tools are not enough, self-exclusion stops you from using your account for a fixed period. Most regulated operators offer 6-month, 1-year and 5-year self-exclusion at the account level.
For multi-operator self-exclusion across UK-licensed sites, register free with GamStop. Ireland does not yet have a national self-exclusion register; the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) is expected to introduce one as part of the rollout of the Gambling Regulation Act 2024.
Combine self-exclusion with blocking software such as Gamban or BetBlocker to block gambling sites and apps on your devices.
